The Anchor Bar 355 East Avenue Rochester, New York 585-861-6475 is Celebrating The Anniversary of King Henry V's Victory at The Battle of Agincourt and The Birthday of The Middle Finger Salute! |
The Anchor Bar (Rochester) is snuggled into one of those magnificent old office buildings that once housed the heartbeat of American Industry. It uses parts of the first two floors of this building, incorporating the second floor areas into a dining balcony that overlooks the main bar, below. An after-thought of its parent bar in Buffalo, it captures the flavor but misses the ambience of its parent. While the original in Buffalo manages the Disney-esque, mind boggling busy-ness that snaps the imagination into wild escapades of fancy, the child in Rochester rests back into the easy-chair of gracious memories of, perhaps of what Rochester once was. |
The overall effect leans more toward elegance than
excitement. The motorcycles are there, above the door, just like Buffalo, but the collection of decades of collectables and fun memories are just beginning. No statue of Dominic Bellisimo adorns the entance. There is no statue of the 1950's waitress puckering at those entering, with a plate in her hand of Buffalo Wings. Exciting elements in the Rochester Anchor Bar include the balcony overlooking the bar and dining area below. * The reason the Anchor Bar in Buffalo had so many people in it and the one in Rochester is virtually empty is because of when I got the pictures. In Buffalo, it was just before the dinner hour. In Rochester, it was morning and they were not open yet. |

I haven't made much of an issue of these old buildings being haunted, but some of the photographs did capture ORBS. In the photograph on the left, don't miss the big orb at the far end of the bar. The balcony dining area (above) is a cozy spot for an intimate dining experience. It's above the noise from the street, away from the bustle of the crowd below and warmed by a spectacular stone hearth; perfect for a warming, relaxing meal on cold winter - Rochester - evenings. |

The Sidewalk Cafe concept changes between Florida and New York. This outdoor dining area in front of the Anchor Bar is on the north side of the building, so one can be out of the sunlight. In Florida, it's too hot to eat outside, most of the time. In Virginia, the sidewalk dining areas were covered to ward off over-doses of sunlight, and rain, I suppose. The outdoor dining in Rochester is a nice refreshment of cool breezes (when the weather is right) and a chance to enjoy view of the interesting architecture surrounding the site - especially Murphy's Law Irish Pub, right across the street. |
As soon as The Anchor Bar in Rochester sends us a copy of the menu, we will post here. |
